The surface is a ceiling. Below it, the Maldives holds manta rays, reef sharks, turtles, and reefs that colour-shift with every metre of depth.

SURFACE

You roll backward off the dhoni. The water is 29°C and impossibly clear — 40 metres of visibility on a good day in the atoll channels.

THE REEF

At ten metres the hard corals begin: tables of acropora, clouds of anthias, a hawksbill turtle unbothered by your bubbles. Colour logic here has its own rules.

THE CHANNEL

At thirty metres, the atoll's edge. This is where the big animals commute — grey reef sharks in formation, eagle rays gliding the current, and if the season is right, a whale shark the size of a bus, indifferent to you entirely.

DEEP BLUE

You hang in the blue at the safety stop, and the ocean's scale quietly rearranges your sense of place in the world. Then up, into light and air — changed.
