Most people take two weeks to reach Everest Base Camp. You will take forty-five minutes.

This is the vertical frontier of travel — a seat at window height with the world's highest wall of rock filling the glass.

Above the Icefall

The Khumbu Icefall is a river of ice the width of a city. From above, its séracs read as sculpture — a frozen ocean paused mid-collapse. Your pilot flies the corridor between Nuptse and the icefall's eastern flank, and the cabin goes quiet.

Landing at Kongma La

We touch down on a ridge shelf at 5,500 metres for champagne and the four-to-the-horizon view: Makalu, Lhotse, Nuptse, Everest. Ten minutes on the ground; a lifetime in the memory.

Return by Light

The flight back runs the glacial valley to Lukla, past Tengboche monastery and the amphitheatre of Namche. In afternoon light the whole route turns gold.
