Chitwan's grasslands and sal forest hold one-horned rhino, Bengal tiger, wild elephant, gharial crocodile, and 540 species of bird — an hour's flight from Everest's glaciers.

The pace is slow by design. This is documentary travel: patient, quiet, rewarded.

DAWN

Mist on the Rapti. The canoe slips downstream past gharial basking on the sandbars. Somewhere in the grass, a tiger has finished the night's work.

THE HUNT

Jeep tracks through the elephant grass — the world's best camouflage for a 2-tonne animal. Then a rhino surfaces 20 metres out, followed by her calf, and the guide holds up a hand: stop, watch, say nothing.

EVENING

Back at the lodge, Tharu drumming by firelight, and the jungle going loud in the dark the way only tropical night can.
